Student from BISLA is helping Afgani couple to escape Taliban
Second-year student Michal Žiga has decided to help the Afgan couple who are under a threat of execution by the Taliban due to their former job positions. They have been trying to escape the Taliban for weeks and would like to leave the country but are unable to do so due to high travel expenses that they cannot afford. For that reason, Michal created a public donation page in order to raise enough money to facilitate their transport to Slovakia.
Naqibullah (30) and his wife Nasrin (24) chose a few years ago to stay in Afghanistan and help participate in the development of their homeland instead of going abroad to secure their own future. Unfortunately, the situation in Afghanistan rapidly changed in August 2021 and now they have no other choice but to escape. They are currently on the Taliban’s wanted list for their cooperation with the West and the former regime. Since August, they have been forced to hide between the walls of their apartment, as searches have been undergone in Kabul. The situation however, only gets worse by the day and the two were forced to escape to Herat, where it is a little bit safer, and Naqibullah has family there. It is a mere stroke of luck that they were not found in their apartment while in Kabul, or while traveling to Herat.
Naqibullah was the project manager for the Capital Region Development Authority, which focused on the development of civil infrastructure. Meanwhile, together the couple established a non-profit organization called the Coordination Council for the Children of Martyrs, which helped children orphaned by the war receive the military pension of their parents in order to fund their education. Nasrin was responsible for relations with the media. Nasrin is a clear example that everything is possible. She herself was orphaned by the war, and while studying English and Pedagogy she took care of her three younger siblings. Naqibullah’s family has a history with the Taliban. His father and uncle fought for the Northern Alliance alongside NATO, for which they were executed and their possessions were seized.
The opportunity to live and study in Slovakia does not only open new prospects for life, but it gives them the opportunity to live at all. As it stands, they currently have no incomes or savings which could be used for their daily needs and the trip to Slovakia. The situation in Afghanistan is a desperate one, and in two to three months they will not have enough to buy food. For this reason, any and all donations are greatly appreciated.
