PLATO ON EDUCATION AND DEMOCRACY
Béla Egyed

In the present context of widespread attacks on intellectual and political expertise, Plato’s aristocratic radicalism deserves a more charitable hearing than it has received from his liberal critics. In this talk, I attempt to show that his views could inspire a thoughtful debate between open minded conservatives and liberals looking for new ways of thinking about politics and ethics.

Plato was first and foremost an educator. At the same time, he was a fierce opponent of direct rule by an unenlightened mob. He believed that serious political discussions are possible only among a small number of individuals who are more interested in attaining knowledge about the affairs of their city as a whole, than gaining short term personal advantage. His attacks on what he saw as a degenerate form of democratic rule in fourth century Athens could be instructive to those who oppose the spread of populism in twenty first century Western democracies.
